JENNA'S MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH

~ From INHERIT THE WORD by Daryl Wood Gerber ~
The Monte Cristo sandwich is a classic. It was one of my mother's all time favorite sandwiches. She used to serve it for brunch on Sundays. It's such a perfect combination of sweet and savory, and you know, it's not too hard to make, even for me. It looks like it has a lot of ingredients, but don't panic. The whole thing layers together like a regular sandwich. The hardest, or messiest, part is dipping the whole shebang in the egg mixture and setting it in the hot oil. Again, don't panic. It's easy once you get the hang of it. Make sure you have plenty of confectioners' sugar on hand to make it pretty! Savor!

Makes 2 Sandwiches

2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
4 slices bread (white or a brioche-style bread works great; gluten free bread                                     works, too)
1 tablespoon spicy mustard
2 slices cooked turkey
4 slices Swiss cheese
2 slice ham
2 tablespoons butter or vegetable oil (canola preferred)
Confectioners' sugar, for decoration
2 tablespoons jam

In a pie plate, whisk together the eggs, milk, and cinnamon.

To assemble the sandwich: Place the bread on a cutting board. Spread mustard on each piece of bread. Place turkey on 2 slices of bread. Top turkey with 2 slices of cheese. Then add the ham. Put remaining pieces of bread on top.

To cook: On medium-low heat, heat butter in a large, nonstick skillet. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture. Turn the sandwich to coat both sides. Set the sandwiches in the skillet. Cover with a lid and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, just until the underside begins to brown. Make sure you don't burn the bread. Flip the sandwich with a spatula and press down to compress the sandwich. Cook for another 3 to 4 minutes or until the underside begins to brown. If necessary, turn once more and cook until the cheese has melted completely, about 1 to 2 minutes.

Transfer to a plate, and sprinkle with confections' sugar. Cut diagonally and serve with a spoonful of jam alongside.

Oh my goodness.
My stomach just growled so loud!
How about you? Are you wanting a Monte Cristo now?

INHERIT THE WORD
Jenna Hart moved back to Crystal Cove, California, to recapture her joie de vivre and to help her aunt Vera run the local culinary bookshop and café. But it's hard to follow a simple recipe for relaxation when murder gets thrown in the mix...

The Cookbook Nook is set to host the town's upcoming Grill Fest, a tasty tradition which pits local amateur chefs against one another to concoct the most delicious dishes. This year's challenge: grilled cheese. But with competing chefs bearing grudges from past years, more mouths are running off than savoring the fare.

The expression "too many cooks" proves all too true when the eight-time champ is found murdered in the alley behind the café. Soon a local diner owner (and Jenna's "second mother") is suspected of bumping off the competition, and Jenna has to douse the flames before the wrong person gets burned...

In the latest in the USA Today bestselling series, someone writes a recipe for murder.…
Jessica loves the Fin & Claw restaurant, owned by young couple Brad and Marcie. And the restaurant is the couple’s dream come true. But when famed chef Gerard Leboeuf decides to open an eatery right next to theirs, tensions rise fast and hot—and lead to a nasty confrontation between Leboeuf and Brad. So when Leboeuf is found dead with a knife planted in his chest, Brad becomes suspect number one. But plenty of others had a motive to kill Leboeuf, and it’s up to Jessica to uncover who really added murder to the menu.

Book 43 in the Murder She Wrote Mystery series

CABOT COVE INCIDENT REPORT
CABOT COVE SHERIFF'S OFFICE
TOWN OF CABOT COVE, STATE OF MAINE

On April 18 an officer from the Cabot Cove Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the area of the new waterfront restaurant at 23 Old Wharf Road on a 911 assault complaint. Responding officers found a white male lying faceup, apparently dead of wounds from a kitchen knife protruding from his torso. A pool of blood was under the body's left side. The victim was identified as the restaurant's chef and owner. Officer notified Sheriff Metzger, who arrived on the scene at 3:24 a.m.

My Friday 56

A party atmosphere had developed in the room, people leaving their tables to chat with friends at other tables, their conversations overriding the smooth Frank Sinatra recordings that came through the restaurant's sounds system. At the same time a certain tension had developed when it came to the staff. The waiters seemed to circle the room aimlessly, going empty-handed as they paced back and forth and went in and out of the kitchen.

    1. Sherry, I never watched the show because, and feel free to laugh, Angela Lansbury frightened me when I was a child when I watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks. LOL Never got over it. But the book was sent to me to review, so I put on my big girl panties and am doing so. ;-)

  3. The cozy recipe post is a great idea! I love me a good monte cristo, and most restaurants don't have them. Maybe if I follow a recipe the ones I make at home will be better.

  10. Monte Cristo is my favorite sandwich! I wish more restaurants had them on their lunch menus.
I didn't realize there was a series of "Murder, She Wrote" books. I'm sure they're fun stories.
    My Friday post features GRACIANNA.

  11. I WANT THAT COOKBOOK! I was hoping it was already out at my last bookstore visit, so I was disappointed that I had to wait. Next time I am in a bookstore...

I watch "Murder She Wrote" on Netflix, or I was last summer. I loved that show, especially when the episodes took place in Maine. I haven't read any of the books, though.

  14. Thank you for reminding me how much I love sandwiches like this; I cannot eat Swiss cheese but always substitute with sharp cheddar or something else with a ton of flavor. I preordered the Cozy Cookbook. I hardly need another books but I thought it would be great fun to have a cookbook with all of my favorite author's recipes in one place. I always watched Murder She Wrote on tv and now want to get this book as well. Thank you for the great recipe and information.
    Sincerely,
    Cynthia B.

  15. Hi Lisa,

I love what we Brits call 'Eggy Bread', so the sandwiches look delicious, although I seldom take the time to check out a recipe I come across in a fiction book, that's what cook books are for!

I used to be an avid fan of 'Murder She Wrote' and would watch all the TV re-runs. Now that hubbie doesn't work away any more and is almost always at home, I don't get the chance any more, as this just really isn't his style at all! I have to admit that I have never read any of the books, but this one does sound quite good and now that I don't have my TV fix ... Well?

It's funny, but the book I am currently reading, I actually thought to myself, sounds like a cross between an episode of 'Murder She Wrote' and Agatha Christie's 'Miss Marple'. Later in the story this fact was actually alluded to by one of the characters, and now you feature a 'Murder She Wrote' story :)

Thanks for sharing and have a good weekend,

    Yvonne

  16. I watch the Murder, She Wrote episodes on NetFlix sometimes but I've never tried any of the books. My first thought upon reading teh beginning was "How does Cabot Cove still have any townsfolk alive?" :D

    Happy reading!
