BOOK TOUR

I'm happy to be a stop on the book tour for
MURDER AT THE MARLOWE CLUB
Book 2 in the Milliner Mysteries
by Kate Parker

A corpse in a corset. A dangerous gambling den. A perilous path between safety and evil.

London, 1905. Leading milliner Emily Gates' illegal shortcut through a private park in the rain brought her straight to a scantily clothed corpse. Then her route took her straight into the hands of the indefatigable Lady Kaldaire, who recognized the body as a relative of her longtime friend, the Duchess of Wallingford. Lady Kaldaire blackmailed Emily before to find Lord Kaldaire's killer. Why not this murderer, too?

Emily has plenty of reasons why not, but finding links between her father's nefarious family of crooks and conmen and the debauchery of the secretive Marlowe Club involves her in the investigation led by the handsome Inspector Russell of Scotland Yard. Emily discovers more than she expects about the licentious world of the corpse through her aristocratic customers, including Georgia, heroine of the Victorian Bookshop Mysteries, now the Duchess of Blackford.

Are the scandal rags correct, or has the victim been maligned by a mastermind who'll stop at nothing to gain everything?

This is a historical cozy mystery with no graphic violence, sex, or foul language. Just exciting action, mysterious events, and surprising endings.

A Chat with author Kate Parker

LKBR:  Thank you for joining us today, Kate.

KP: Thank you for inviting me, Lisa.

LKBR: Please tell us a bit about Murder at the Marlowe Club.

KP: Murder at the Marlowe Club is the second in the Milliner Mysteries, and is set in London in 1905. The milliner in question is Emily Gates, creator of hats for aristocrats, the wealthy, and leaders of society. Unknown to her clients, she is a member of the notorious Gates family, the only honest member in three generations of swindlers, conmen, burglars, and crooks.

When the story opens, Emily finds the scantily clad body of a young woman with her throat slit in a private park in Mayfair. One of the keyholders of this park is Lady Kaldaire, a client of Emily’s, who recognized the victim. Immediately, Emily is pulled two ways, between Scotland Yard and Lady Kaldaire, who wishes to launch her own investigation. When the Gates family find out the connection between the murder and the dangerous Marlowe Club, they try to stop Emily’s involvement, but Lady Kaldaire is blackmailing her into helping the lady’s investigation because she knows of Emily’s connection to the criminals.

Add one handsome Scotland Yard detective, and Emily is caught in the middle of murder.

LKBR: What are you plans for this series?

KP: Georgia Fenchurch, the heroine of the Victorian Bookshop Mysteries, and her now husband, the Duke of Blackford, get involved in this mystery along with some of the other members of the Archivist Society. I plan to have them reappear in more of the Milliner Mysteries as Emily’s investigations will involve crimes that touch her wealthy clientele and the Duke and Duchess’s circle of friends.

LKBR: Are you working on any new projects?

KP: I’m working on my next book, Deadly Travel, the fifth in the Deadly Series set just prior to World War II in London. After that, I have a great idea for the sixth in the Deadly Series, but that requires a trip to London and research at the British Library.

LKBR: When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?

KP: I’ve always wanted to write, but I chose a career path in the medical and technical fields. It wasn’t until my youngest had graduated from college that I began to explore writing seriously.

LKBR: Was getting your first book published everything you thought it would be? The feelings? The process?

KP: My first book was published by Berkley Prime Crime, and I was thrilled. It was an easy process. I was certain I was on the road to fame and fortune. I wish someone had told me a writing career has more twists and turns than a Monte Carlo road race.

LKBR: How did you handle it when changes were made to your first manuscript? I don’t have a thick skin, so I know how I would have felt.

KP:  I’ve always appreciated editorial input. It’s always made my story stronger. Now that I’m indie published, I have to go looking for the best editorial advice I can find, and I’m always grateful for it.

LKBR: What is your favorite part of being a writer?

KP:  My commute. I walk from my bedroom to my study in my pjs. In all weathers and traffic tie-ups, it never takes me more than 15 seconds to get to work. 😉 Seriously, it’s the ability to tell whatever story I want to tell to bring enjoyment to readers.

LKBR: Have you ever read a book that has stayed with you long after reading it?

KP:  Hands down, To Kill a Mockingbird. I read it fifty years ago and I still go back and reread it every couple of years. It sucks me in every time and I always find something new.

LKBR: Why are reviews, good or bad, so important to authors?

KP:  Good reviews are a pat on the head for our egos. Bad reviews, if they’re about the correct book (that doesn’t always happen) and aren’t complaining that a cozy author doesn’t write like a thriller writer (that happened to me), will teach us something that can be very helpful. Plus, other readers judge whether they want to read a book by the reviews, and every author wants to be read.

LKBR: On what sites do you recommend readers leave their reviews?

KP:  Amazon, Apple, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, depending on where they purchased their book, plus Bookbub and Goodreads. These last two are followed by millions of readers of bought or borrowed books.

LKBR: Thank you so much, Kate for letting us get to know you better!

KP: Thank you, Lisa, for inviting me. It’s been fun talking today.

My Review

Different from my favorite set-in-modern-days cozies, I still wanted to read MURDER AT THE MARLOWE CLUB just for the talented writing style of author Kate Parker.

All in all this was another wonderful book from Ms. Parker. Her descriptions put you right in the story. Her knowledge of the time period this tale takes place in shines through. And, she knows how to plot a mystery that will keep you guessing until the end.

If you were a fan of the first book in this series, you will enjoy, MURDER AT THE MARLOWE CLUB.

There is one scene in the story that took me aback. It’s a subject matter that I have personal issues reading about. When publishing a traditional or cozy mystery where readers are used to a clean story with no troubling content, I wish there would be a disclaimer about certain subject matter.

About Kate Parker

Kate Parker grew up reading her mother’s collection of mystery books and her father’s library of history and biography books. Now she can’t write a story that isn’t set in the past with a few decent corpses littered about. Author Links
