This week's recipe is from

SCONED TO DEATH

Book 5 in the Cat Latimer Mysteries

Cat Latimer pursues a scone-cold killer who iced a top chef in a local bakery . . . 
Cat has a full plate at her Aspen Hills Warm Springs Resort, as a group of aspiring cozy mystery authors arrives for a writers retreat. So when baker Dee Dee Meyer stirs up trouble by filing a false complaint with the health inspector against the B&B—all because she insists Cat's best friend Shauna stole her recipes—Cat marches into the shop to confront her.

But Dee Dee's about to have her own batch of trouble. Greyson Finn—a celebrity chef and, until today, one of Denver's most eligible bachelors—has been found dead in her bakery. Cat's uncle Pete, who happens to be the chief of police, warns her not to engage in any half-baked sleuthing. But as her curiosity rises, Cat's determined to discover who served the chef his just desserts—before the killer takes a powder . . .

CRANBERRY SCONES

Preheat over to 425 degrees F. 

In a large bowl, mix:

   2 cups flour

   2 tsp baking powder

   ½ tsp salt

Add:

   4 Tbsp cold butter cut into chunks

Mix the cold butter into the flour with a pastry knife until the mixture looks like small peas.

Add:

   3 Tbsp sugar

   ½ cup dried cranberries

In a small bowl, beat together:

   ½ cup half and half

   1 large egg

Add wet mixture to dry, but don't over mix. Then knead the dough no more than a dozen times. Roll out onto a floured surface and cut the circle into 8 wedges. Place scones on a lightly greased cookie sheet and brush some half and half on the top.

Bake for 10-14 minutes. Serve warm with butter.

MY REVIEW

In SCONDED TO DEATH, author Lynn Cahoon brings back our favorite inn proprietress, Cat Latimer, who this time is hosting a group of aspiring cozy mystery authors to her writer’s retreat. Seriously? Does it get any better for a cozy mystery reader than that?! Perfection! And I have no doubt Ms. Cahoon had to have taken some real life cues on this one.

As with the first four installments of the Cat Latimer Mysteries, SCONED TO DEATH is a superbly written book. Author Cahoon has a true talent for detail, making readers feel like a part of her stories. I know I always do. When I was finished, I felt like I had lived the experience of the story rather than having read it.

  I was truly stumped with this mystery. I just couldn’t settle on whodunit, never mind why they dunit. Even as I kept warning Cat (Yes. I talk to the characters.), to stay out of the investigation, I couldn’t wait for her to follow each new lead because I was hoping for answers as much as she was. And then I was floored with the reveal. I just didn’t see it coming.

All I can say is, Ms. Cahoon, keep the Cat Latimer mysteries coming! If they’re half as good as SCONED TO DEATH, they’ll be fabulous!

There is nothing like the taste of coffee, first thing in the morning. Maybe it's the warmth flowing through your body. (Or maybe it's the jolt of caffeine.) The mixture did miracles for a wake-up call.
