A Word With Julie

LKBR:  Thank you for being here today, Julie!

JAL: Thank you SO MUCH for having me Lisa!!

LKBR: Please tell us a bit about you, and APPLE CIDER SLAYING/Cider Shop Mysteries.

JAL: I’m so excited about APPLE CIDER SLAYING! This is the first book in my new Cider Shop Mysteries series with Kensington Books! It features my heroine, Winona Mae Montgomery, who lives with her Granny Smythe, on the family apple orchard in Blossom Valley, West Virginia . A small town in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. In APPLE CIDER SLAYING, Winnie is trying to secure a small business loan to open a cider shop in the historic Mail Pouch barn on the family property, but the body of her Granny’s arch nemesis is found in the cider press during the banker’s tour, and the new sheriff thinks Granny is the killer!

LKBR: Any hints or spoilers you can give us about the book?

JAL: Sure! No one knows Blossom Valley or its people like Winnie does, so when she decides to clear Granny’s name, Sheriff Wise had better look out! Also, Apple Cider Slaying is set at Christmastime, so readers can expect a heaping helping of holiday cheer plus three fun recipes at the end. All are sure to make your next potluck more delicious!

LKBR: Have you ever written a scene that you loved but had to remove it for the sake of the story?

JAL: I have! Multiple times, though not in the course of writing this book. Part of the reason for having to pull scenes is to keep a novel focused and on word count, but the longer I write, the better I get at nailing both of those the first time. That said, there are times I’m having so much fun that I get carried away and let the characters take the lead. When that happens, I wind up with scenes and exchanges that might not be imperative to the plot, but they’re a really good time, so I tuck them away for later and pull them out to share with readers down the road!

LKBR: Have you ever gotten reader’s block? Just find it hard to get into reading because you are so into your writing?

JAL: More often I have trouble finding the time to read because I’m so underwater with deadlines. Thank goodness for audio books! You can find me listening to stories while I cook, clean, do dishes and wait in the school pickup line 😊

LKBR: Is there anything you would give up if you thought it would make you an even better writer?

JAL: Why not? I’ve already given up sleep and my figure in favor of sitting at my desk all day every day and most of every night!

LKBR: Any new projects in the works?

JAL: Always! I’ve already written the next two novels in the Cider Shop Mysteries. And I stay busy writing romantic suspense for Harlequin Intrigue as well as other cozy series under pen names!

LKBR: If you could ask your readers 3 questions, what would they be?

JAL: What am I doing right?

My Review

I loved the thought of this book when I first heard about it. Everything from the cover to the setting had me sold. When I found out the author, using pennames, writes two of my other favorite series, I couldn’t get my hands on it fast enough! It lived up to everything I hoped for and more!

APPLE CIDER SLAYING is the first book in the Cider Shop Mysteries. Having started and finished this book in October, it was exactly what the doctor ordered for cozy fall reading. Filled to bursting with mystery, great characters, a beautiful setting, and a bushel full of everything I look for in a book, I didn’t want it to end.

Author Julie Anne Lindsey has delivered with APPLE CIDER SLAYING a delicious story (speaking of delicious, there are recipes included) that is one of my favorite picks of the year, and is sure to be just the beginning of a delightfully wonderful crop of books!
