A DEADLY FEAST
Book 9 in the Key West Food Critic Mysteries
by Lucy Burdette
National bestselling author Lucy Burdette’s intrepid food critic Hayley Snow must sniff out a killer in the ninth Key West Food Critic mystery.
Key West food critic Hayley Snow scents-es something fishy when a customer falls stone-crab cold dead on a seafood tasting tour.
Thanksgiving is nearly here, and Key West food critic Hayley Snow has just one more assignment to put to bed for Key Zest magazine before she gets to celebrate with her family and her police officer fiancΓ©, Nathan Bransford. Then, just days later, wedding bells will ring—if death doesn’t toll first.
The sweet potatoes and stuffing will have to wait when Hayley picks up a distraught phone call from her friend, Analise Smith. On the last stop of a seafood tasting tour run by Analise, one of the customers collapsed—dead. With the police on the verge of shutting down the tour—and ruining Analise’s business—Hayley can hardly refuse her friend’s entreaties to investigate.
As if wedding jitters and family strife weren’t enough for Hayley to worry about, there’s crusty pastry chef Martha Hubbard, whose key lime pie may have been the murder weapon—but did she poison her own pie or was she framed? As the hours to Turkey Day tick away, the pressure cooker is on for Hayley to serve up the culprit on a silver platter in A Deadly Feast, national bestselling author Lucy Burdette’s taste-tempting ninth Key West Food Critic mystery.

An interview with Lucy
LKBR: Thank you for being here today, Lucy!
LB:
Thanks
so much for inviting me!
LKBR: Please
tell us a bit about you, and your book.
LB: The new
book, A DEADLY FEAST, is the ninth book in the Key West mystery series,
featuring food critic Hayley Snow. Here’s a description of A DEADLY FEAST:
Before
Key Zest food critic Hayley Snow's family descends on the island for
Thanksgiving and her wedding to heartthrob Detective Nathan Bransford, she has
one last assignment--a review of a seafood tasting tour conducted by her friend
Analise Smith. But when one of the tourists collapses on the last stop, Analise
begs her to investigate before the police destroy her business and shut down
the local Key West eateries on her tour. Pressure mounts when Analise calls a
second time to request that Hayley meet with Chef Martha Hubbard, who prepared
key lime pies for the tasting tour and is terrified that someone poisoned her
pies to ruin her reputation. Chefs all around town are preparing their versions
of a Thanksgiving feast, but with a murderer on the loose, will Hayley and her
friends have anything left to be thankful for?
Before
becoming a writer, I was a clinical psychologist! As of this week, I have
published 17 mysteries, including the latest in the Key West food critic
series, A DEADLY FEAST (CROOKED LANE, MAY 2019.) My books and stories have been
short-listed for Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity awards. I’m a member of Mystery
Writers of America and a past president of Sisters in Crime. I have a lovely
husband and an endlessly entertaining kitten named Tbone.
LKBR: Any hints
or spoilers you can give us about your next book?
LB: This
could change but here’s the preliminary description for The Key Lime Crime (2020)
With
her intimidating new mother-in-law bearing down on the island and a fierce
rivalry between Key lime pie bakers to referee, food critic Hayley Snow is
feeling anything but festive…
It’s the
week between Christmas and New Year’s and Key West is bursting at the seams
with holiday events and hordes of tourists. Adding to the chaos, Key lime pie
aficionado David Sloan has persuaded the city to host his Key Lime pie
extravaganza and contest. Hayley Snow can’t escape the madness because her
bosses at Key Zest magazine have assigned her to cover the event. Every pie
purveyor in Key West is determined to claim the Key lime spotlight—and win the
coveted Key Lime Key to the City.
Newlywed
Hayley must play the dutiful daughter-in-law, so she and her pal Miss
Gloria offer to escort Nathan’s mom on the iconic Conch Train Tour of the
island's holiday lights. But it's not all glittering palm trees
and fantastic flamingos--the unlikely trio finds a real body
stashed in one of the elaborate displays.
LKBR: Have you ever written a scene that you loved but had to
remove it for the sake of the story?
LB: After I
took the Key West Citizens’ Police Academy, I was very gung-ho about including
everything I’d learned in MURDER WITH GANACHE. One of those things had to do
with a police dog rushing in to help Hayley Snow with the bad guy. My good pal,
Steve Torrence, pointed out that these dogs don’t know the difference between
good guys and bad guys, so they would never be sent in where hostages were
being held. Sadly, I took that scene out.
LKBR: Have you ever
gotten reader’s block? Just find it hard to get into reading
because you are so into your writing?
LB: I have sometimes
felt as though I need to read something other than mysteries, so then I switch
to women’s fiction. But never have I felt like giving up reading—it’s like
breathing to me, and a great pleasure in my life!
LKBR: Are there any
magazines/publications that as a writer you subscribe to? Are these or others
something readers could also benefit from?
LB: I mostly read
magazines and publications online these days, though I prefer to read actual
paper books. I would love to recommend
the group blogs I work on, Jungleredwriters.com and mysteryloverskitchen.com.
JRW consists of daily blogs by 7 fabulous crime fiction writers with lots of
guests and lots of fun.
MLK is run by cozy culinary mystery writers, full of
yummy recipes and book reommendations.
LKBR: Any new projects
in the works?
LB: Always!
I am working on the tenth Key West food critic mystery, as described above--
THE KEY LIME CRIME. This one will be out in 2020. Also, I’ve been trying my
hand at a women’s fiction-type novel about a psychologist who’s accidently
become a happiness expert, even though she herself isn’t all that happy. I’ll
keep you posted on that!
LKBR: If you
could ask your readers 3 questions, what would they be?
LB: How
many books in a series are you willing/eager to read?
How do
you choose what you’ll read next, and where do you hear about these books?
What
makes you say: wow, I definitely want to read that!
LKBR: Where can
readers go to learn more about you and your books?
