BOOK TOUR

I'm most happy to be a stop on the blog tour for
BOTCHED 4 MURDER
Book 4 in the Sophie KimballMysteries
by J.C. Eaton

Bowled over . . .

Sophie “Phee” Kimball is getting dragged into the drama again at her mom’s Arizona retirement community. A new board member wants to get rid of two golf courses and replace them with eco-friendly parks, and some of the residents are pretty teed off about it. On top of that, her mother’s book club friend Myrna is being pushed out of the bocce league. These seniors are serious about winning, and Myrna’s dragging them down. She’s so bad at bocce, in fact, that when a community mem.ber’s dead body is discovered while Myrna’s practicing for a tournament, she assumes it was one of her own errant balls that killed the woman.

But before Myrna can be tossed off the bocce court and into criminal court, the police find an arrow in the victim’s neck. It looks like this was no accident—and Phee and her investigator boyfriend Marshall will have to team up to bounce a killer into the slammer . . .

LKBR: Thank you for being here today. Please tell us a bit about BOTCHED 4 MURDER.

JCE: BOTCHED 4 MURDER is the fourth book in our Sophie Kimball Mysteries (Kensington). Forty-something amateur sleuth and bookkeeper/accountant Sophie (Phee) Kimball from Mankato, MN, winds up in her mother’s retirement community of Sun City West, AZ when she’s asked to solve a number of suspicious deaths. Her mother, Harriet Plunkett, and her loony aunt Ina, coupled with their book club ladies drive Phee crazy as she tries to unravel the clues and solve the mysteries. To make matters worse, Phee’s mother has adopted the most neurotic little dog ever, a Chiweenie by the name of Streetman, whose quirks are enough to push anyone over the edge, especially Phee.

In BOTCHED 4 MURDER, Phee is at it again, only this time at the Sun City West bocce courts when her mother’s friend, Myrna, is convinced she killed someone with a lobbed bocce ball that managed to get into the adjoining golf course. Naturally, there’s a dead body, but it wasn’t a bocce ball that felled the victim – it was a bow and arrow!
To make matters worse, the community is all a-buzz with the latest proposal from one of its board members – turn the golf courses into eco-friendly parks. With more threats than imaginable, Phee’s worried the golf course victim won’t be the last.

LKBR: How did you come up with the concept?

JCE: We live in Sun City West and watch all of the antics that go on around here. Then, we embellish them and use hyperbole to move the story and characters along. We take composites of people, including our own relatives, and create quirky characters.

LKBR: What are your future plans for the Sophie Kimball series? Any hints or spoilers you can give us about the next book?

JCE: The series continues with MOLDED 4 MURDER, HOLIDAZED 4 MURDER, BROADCAST 4 MURDER, AND RAILROADED 4 MURDER. Each book focuses on a different club or activity going on in Sun City West and its surrounding communities in the West Valley of Phoenix. Right now, we’ve completed some first drafts and a number of edits so we can stay on schedule.
MOLDED 4 MURDER is set for release in the spring of 2019 and it deals with a mysterious murder at the clay club.

LKBR: Is writing an energizing experience, or does it take a lot out of you?

JCE:  Wow. Both. Sometimes one of us gets on a roll and goes non-stop. Other times, it really involves pushing a boulder uphill. We really enjoy the experience and can’t imagine not doing this.

LKBR: Once you knew you wanted to be a published writer, who was the first person you reached out to for help?

JCE: Before we started on this joint venture, Ann wrote a number of YA time travel novels (www.timetravelmysteries.com) and she reached out to other published authors in that genre. Our agent, Dawn Dowdle, has been indispensable in terms of help and support as we were getting started on our cozy mysteries. She continues to be there for us and we genuinely appreciate it. In addition, we have a fabulous editor at Kensington, Tara Gavin, as well as a very supportive editor, Jennifer McCord, at Camel for our Marcie Rayner detective series.

LKBR: What sort of research do you do for your books? Is it more computer based or hands on?

JCE: We do both kinds of research for our novels. We talk with people who are familiar with the different aspects that appear in our novels and we use the internet all the time for our searches. In our Wine Trail Mysteries, (Kensington), Jim did a tremendous amount of research on chocolatiers and the processes they use for making chocolate. Spoiler alert – That novel, SAUVIGONE FOR GOOD, won’t be out until next year.

LKBR: What is your writing process? Place, time of day, by the hour or word count?

JCE: We write whenever we can and we both work in different parts of the house or we’d drive each other nuts. Then, we get together and review our notes, etc. The summer is the best writing time for us because it gets SO hot here in Arizona (triple degree temps) that we are indoors from noon to seven at night. Great time to write.

LKBR: How do you come up with character names?

JCE: We look at club directories, church/synagogue directories, and real estate agent names. Then, we alter them to create new names that fit our characters. Sometimes, out of the blue, a name just pops up. In the case of Sophie Kimball, we named her after our great niece, Phee.

LKBR: Is it difficult to write characters of the opposite sex?

JCE: Since we are a husband and wife team, we rely on each other.
(LKBR: Readers, did you know J.C. Eaton is a husband and wife team?)

LKBR: Do you read reviews of your books? If you do, and a review is bad, what effect does it have on you? (I know some reviews are mean as opposed to constructive.)

JCE: Jim doesn’t let the negative reviews get to him but Ann sure does if the review is mean-spirited. Constructive advice is always welcomed and we do use it.

LKBR: What are 3 things readers may not know about you?

JCE: We are total animal lovers and have worked with a number of rescue groups.

We are also foster failures and that’s how we wound up with our five cats and our dog.

Ann is terrified of snakes and when one of them got into our house she called the fire department even though Jim was well on his way of removing it. We used that scenario in our first Sophie Kimball mystery, BOOKED 4 MURDER.

LKBR: Where can readers go to learn more about you and your books?

JCE:

Barnes & Noble:

LKBR: Thank you so much for letting us get to know you better!

Having read only the first book in the Sophie Kimball Mysteries, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to follow along in this fourth installment. Of course, things have changed, and the characters have grown, but I had no problem following this story at all.

BOTCHED 4 MURDER was another fun visit to Arizona with Phee, and the sassy seniors of Sun City West. This mystery was full of hijinks, mayhem, and surprises. The twists and turns were so sharp even a seasoned sleuth would have been shocked at the story’s reveal.

BOTCHED 4 MURDER is not to be missed by fans of this series. And like me, you’ll be left highly anticipating the next book.
