A MEASURE OF MURDER
Book 2 in the Sally Solari Mysteries
by Leslie Karst
A MEASURE OF MURDER, book two in the Sally Solari
culinary mystery series, was just released on February 7, 2017 (Crooked Lane
Books).
Sally Solari is busy juggling work at her family’s Italian
restaurant, Solari’s, and helping plan the autumn menu for the restaurant she’s
just inherited, Gauguin. Complicating this already hectic schedule, she joins
her ex-boyfriend Eric’s chorus, which is performing a newly discovered version
of her favorite composition: the Mozart Requiem.
But then, at the first rehearsal, a tenor falls to his death on the church
courtyard—and his soprano girlfriend is sure it wasn’t an accident.
Now Sally's back on another murder case mixed in with a dash
of revenge, a pinch of peril, and a suspicious stack of sheet music. And while
tensions in the chorus heat up, so does the kitchen at Gauguin, set aflame
right as Sally starts getting too close to the truth. Can Sally catch the
killer before she’s burnt to a crisp, or will the case grow as cold as
yesterday’s leftovers?
“Engaging characters, terrific writing, and a savory blend
of musical and culinary erudition...polymath Karst sauces her plot without
masking its flavor. And she’s a dab hand with the red herrings.” Publishers Weekly starred review

On to the recipe!
Sally’s Decadent Blondies
When Sally Solari joins the chorus that her ex- (but best
friend) Eric sings in, she’s delighted to discover that dessert is an integral
part of each rehearsal. Proud of her rich and chewy blondies, she offers to
whip up a batch for the chorus members.
(yield: one 9” x 13” pan)
Ingredients
½ lb. (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
1 cup chopped macadamia nuts
1 cup white chocolate chips
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, and butter or oil a 9” x 13”
baking pan.
Pour the melted butter into a large bowl, add the brown
sugar, and stir together until blended. Add eggs and vanilla and beat until
smooth.
Add salt and flour and stir until no streaks of flour
remain. Stir in mac nuts and white chocolate chips.
Dump batter into oiled pan and smooth with your spoon (it
will be thick and gooey).
Bake until a toothpick inserted in the middle of the pan
comes out relatively clean—about 25 minutes. (Err on the side of them being
underdone; chewy blondies are ever so much better than dry ones!)
Let cool, then cut into squares. The blondies can be eaten
right away, or covered tightly in plastic wrap and frozen for later use.
Oh my goodness.
I can just imagine biting into one of these!
