Bodie Island Chronicle

Storm Devastates Coast!

By Eva Gates

Bodie Island, Outer Banks, North Carolina

A devastating storm roared ashore last night close to the location of the Bodie Island Lighthouse near Nags Head. Although the sudden and unexpected storm thankfully caused no injuries, destruction was wide-spread.

The Coast Guard was called out to help a motor boat in distress off Coquina Beach.  Boat owner, Outer Banks native William Williamson who has returned after many years away, insisted that he was not in trouble and needed no help.  He claimed that he had been tricked into bringing his boat ashore, and thus to its doom, by unexplained lights on the beach.  Coast Guard Volunteer Ralph Harper insisted that there are no lights in the location Williamson was talking about. Harper indicated that perhaps unexperienced sailors shouldn’t be out in a storm.

Coast Guard members found it necessary to keep Williamson and Harper apart to avoid an altercation.

As unlikely as Williamson’s story sounds, one reliable source did back him up. Assistant Librarian and resident of the Bodie Island Lighthouse, Lucy Richardson, told this reporter that she also saw lights on the beach that night – lights where there should be no lights.

However, When Ms. Richardson called 911 to report a boat in distress she didn’t mention any lights, so the police are not taking her statement seriously.

Sources suggest that Ms. Richardson was overtired after a party at the library to celebrate library director Bertie James’s ten years on the job. This reporter knows that the Bodie Island Classic Novel Reading Club, meetings of which are led by Ms. Richardson, is currently reading Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stephenson, which might have helped to put the idea of mysterious lights in her mind.

I did some research into this story, and learned that one of the one of the men from the wrecked power boat was found dead, and murder is suspected! Wow, survive a shipwreck only to be killed on dry land.

A special thank you to Eva Gates on her article, and for sharing it with The Cozy Times.

That's this week's edition of
The Cozy Times
I hope you enjoyed!

Book 1

Get bound up in murder in the first Lighthouse Library mystery!

For ten years Lucy has enjoyed her job poring over rare tomes of literature for the Harvard Library, but she has not enjoyed the demands of her family’s social whorl or her sort-of-engagement to the staid son of her father’s law partner. But when her ten-year relationship implodes, Lucy realizes that the plot of her life is in need of a serious rewrite.

Calling on her aunt Ellen, Lucy hopes that a little fun in the Outer Banks sun—and some confections from her cousin Josie’s bakery—will help clear her head. But her retreat quickly turns into an unexpected opportunity when Aunt Ellen gets her involved in the lighthouse library tucked away on Bodie Island.

Lucy is thrilled to land a librarian job in her favorite place in the world. But when a priceless first edition Jane Austen novel is stolen and the chair of the library board is murdered, Lucy suddenly finds herself ensnared in a real-life mystery—and she’s not so sure there’s going to be a happy ending....

To make matters worse, Suzanne picks a very public fight at the local hotel with her former classmate Karen Kivas. So, when Karen turns up dead outside the library the next morning, Suzanne is immediately at the top of the suspect list.
