When Emory finds the body of Mrs. Parker amidst an explosive situation, it becomes apparent there is more truth to the whispers instead of just gossip. Could one of the canine-loving participants be responsible? Or an outsider who hated her heavy-handed rule over the condo homeowners? Emory, Vannie, and octogenarian Tillie must sift through the clues to find out who has been betrayed and who has decided to take justice into their own hands.

Ingredients
Cinnamon Streusel:
1 1/2 cups
all-purpose flour
1/2 cup brown
sugar
1/4 cup granulated
sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon
cinnamon
1/2 cup unsalted
butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cake:
1/4 cup unsalted
butter, room temperature
1/2 cup granulated
sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup sour cream
1 cup all-purpose
flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon
baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 large tart apple, peeled, cored and chopped
Instructions
Preheat
the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8-inch round cake tin and line with
parchment paper. Set aside.
Cinnamon
Streusel:
Stir
together the flour, sugars, salt, and cinnamon, then slowly pour in the melted
butter and vanilla. Stir until the butter is fully incorporated. Set aside.
Cake:
In
the bowl of a standing mixer, cream together the butter and granulated sugar.
Mix for 3 minutes on medium speed then beat in the egg. Add the vanilla and
sour cream and mix until thoroughly incorporated.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Slowly mix into the butter-and-sugar mixture and stir just until combined.
Spread
half of the batter on the bottom of the prepared cake tin. (It will be a thin
layer.) Spread the apple chunks over the batter then sprinkle 1 cup of the
cinnamon streusel over the apples. Spread the remaining batter into the cake
tin and top with the remaining streusel.
Bake
35 to 40 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the center of the cake comes
out mostly clean.
Cool
in the cake tin for 15 minutes, then place the surface of a plate on top of the
cake. Invert the cake onto the plate and remove the cake tin. Place a serving
platter onto the bottom of the cake and invert so that the streusel is on the
top. Allow to cool completely before serving with a dollop of whipped cream or
a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
