BOOK TOUR

I'm so excited today to be hosting author
Mary Lee Ashford
during her
RISKY BISCUITS
book tour! And I'm thrilled to be doing it on
Cozy Food Friday!

Former magazine editor “Sugar” Calloway’s life has taken a delicious twist since she launched a community cookbook publishing business with blue-ribbon baker Dixie Spicer. Now these amateur sleuths must solve a small-town murder—without getting burned . .
Sugar and Spice Cookbooks’ newest project is a fundraiser organized by the St. Ignatius Crack of Dawn Breakfast Club, famous for their all-you-can-eat biscuits and gravy events. But when a group member is found dead, Sugar and Spice’s priorities change from raising dough to figuring out who put murder on the menu.
The return of former badboy Nick Marchant has stirred the town’s gossips too. Add a few grudges and some old-fashioned greed over a land deal into the mix, and it’s a recipe for mayhem. And when someone serves up a second helping of murder, Sugar and Spice need to sift the guilty from the blameless, or their next breakfast may be their last . . .
Includes delicious recipes!

So Easy Cheddar Chive Biscuits
Mary Lee Ashford

In the Sugar and Spice Mysteries Sugar Calloway is the business savvy in the community cookbook business and Dixie Spicer is the cooking talent. Dixie has spent years perfecting her recipes and has won many a blue ribbon at the Iowa State Fair. Though Sugar appreciates good food (and is always ready to taste test Dixie’s cooking, when she cooks, she tends to go for what’s fast and easy.

Because of that Dixie has named this recipe, Cheddar Biscuits So Easy Even Sugar Can Make Them, though you may want to file them as – So Easy Cheddar Biscuits.  Whatever you call them, they are melt-in-your-mouth delicious!

Ingredients:

1 cup buttermilk (chilled)
8 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon sugar
½ teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
¾ teaspoon salt
1 and ¼ cups shredded cheddar cheese
¼ cup fresh chives (sliced thin)
2 cups flour

Instructions:

1. Heat oven to 425 degrees

2. Heat butter in the microwave for about 30 seconds to melt and then set aside.

3. In a large bowl, mix dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt)

4. Add cheese and chives and stir.

5. Mix the butter and buttermilk together. The butter needs to have cooled and the buttermilk should be cold.

6. Add the butter and buttermilk to the dry ingredients and stir until fully mixed. Don’t over-mix but all the flour should be stirred in and the dough should not be wet.

7. Spread some flour over your work surface. If you don’t have a pastry board a clean cutting board will work just fine.

8. Dump the biscuit dough from the bowl and turn it to coat with flour. Fold over and knead 4 or 5 times and then pat it into a circle that’s approximately one inch thick.

9. Cut as many biscuits as you can with a biscuit cutter. Or a glass works, too. Knead the scraps together and then cut more.

10. Place on the sheet plan or cookie sheet about an inch apart and put them in the oven.

11. Cook for about 10 minutes. It depends on your oven, so it’s a good idea to check them at 7 or 8 minutes because you want them to be light and flaky, not over-baked.

12. Once you remove them from the oven, melt a little butter and brush the tops while they’re hot. You can also sprinkle a few sliced chives on top if you like.

MY REVIEW

Go ahead and spend your dough, because there’s nothing risky in buying this book. It’s a delicious investment of your time.

Reading RISKY BISCUITS is the best thing I have done for myself in weeks. The minute I opened the book, I was off to St. Ignatius and a day of truly enjoyable cozy reading.

Lead characters Sugar & Spice are back, and they are as delightful as ever. I’d love to sit down and have a chat with them. If pesky murders wouldn’t keep getting in the way of course.

Author Mary Lee Ashford knows how to pull a reader in and keep them transfixed. RISKY BISCUITS is a well written story, with a mystery that made me feel like I hand been put through the mixer, in a good way! My head was spinning by the time of the reveal. I was so surprised!

I can’t wait to see what Sugar & Spice are up to next!
