It's
Cozy Food Friday

That means it's time to share a recipe from
another great cozy mystery!

Today I'm featuring a recipe from
TANGLED UP IN BREW
Book 2 in the Brewing Trouble Mysteries
by
Joyce Tremel

Another intoxicating mystery featuring brew pub owner Maxine “Max” O’Hara—from the author of To Brew or Not to Brew.

BEER TODAY, GONE TOMORROW...

Brew pub owner Maxine “Max” O’Hara and her chef/boyfriend Jake Lambert are excited to be participating in the Three Rivers Brews and Burgers Festival. Max hopes to win the coveted Golden Stein for best craft beer—but even if she doesn’t, the festival will be great publicity for her Allegheny Brew House.

Or will it? When notoriously nasty food and beverage critic Reginald Mobley is drafted as a last-minute replacement judge, Max dreads a punishing review. Her fears are confirmed when Mobley literally spits out her beer, but things get even worse when the cranky critic drops dead right after trying one of Jake’s burgers. Now an ambitious new police detective is determined to pin Mobley’s murder on Max and Jake, who must pore over the clues to protect their freedom and reputations—and to find the self-appointed judge, jury, and executioner.

About the author

Joyce Tremel was a police secretary for ten years and more than once envisioned the demise of certain co-workers, but settled on writing as a way to keep herself out of jail. She is a native Pittsburgher and lives in a suburb of the city with her husband and a spoiled cat.

Her debut mystery, To Brew Or Not To Brew has been nominated for the 2015 Reviewers' Choice award for best amateur sleuth by RT Book Reviews. The second book in the series, Tangled Up In Brew is scheduled for release in October 2016.

My Book Beginnings and Friday 56
 for this week are from
TO BREW OR NOT TO BREW
Book 1 in the Brewing Trouble Mystery series

An all-new mystery series set in a Pittsburgh craft brew pub, featuring a brewmaster with a head for sleuthing.
The Allegheny Brew House is a dream come true for Maxine “Max” O’Hara, who went all the way to Germany for her brewmaster certification, and is now preparing to open her own craft brew pub in a newly revitalized section of Pittsburgh. But before she can start pouring stouts and lagers to thirsty throngs, there’s trouble on tap. Suspicious acts of sabotage culminate in Max finding her assistant brewmaster and chef Kurt Schmidt strangled in one of the vats.
Between rescuing a stray gray tabby she names Hops and considering a handsome ex-hockey player as her new chef, Max doesn’t have a lot of time to solve a murder. But with a homicide detective for a dad, she comes to criminal investigation naturally. And if someone is desperate enough to kill to stop her from opening, Max needs to act fast—before her brand-new brew biz totally tanks...

My Book Beginnings

If looks could kill, the plumbing inspector giving me the bad news would have been in big trouble. "What do you mean there's a crack in the water line?" I said. "That's just not possible."

"Right here." He pointed. "You're going to have to replace the whole piece."

Sure enough, there was a one-inch gash in the line running to the brand-new stainless steel brew kettle, which we'd just installed a few days ago. I was hoping to brew a batch of pale ale tomorrow, but that was now out of the question.

My Friday 56

He kissed me on the cheek and squeezed my should. "And I will see you here on Sunday."

I watched him drive away and returned to my Corolla. I'd just started the engine when my cell phone rang. I didn't recognize the number. I answered anyway, ready to yell at whatever telemarketer was calling me even though I was on the Do Not Call Registry. I was wrong about who the caller was. It was the alarm company. My motion detectors had been set off.

Except for the kiss on the cheek, seems like protagonist, Maxine "Max" O'Hara is going to be in for a rough time.

Have you ever wondered what your favorite authors are doing when they aren't writing those wonderful cozy mysteries that we love so much?

Do they have other jobs, hobbies, hidden talents?

Now you can find out!

Stop by the blog on Thursdays for delightful guest posts from our amazing authors!
They're going to be sharing all sorts of things that they do when they're not writing.

Today's special guest author is

Linda O. Johnston
Linda is the author of the wonderful
Barkery & Biscuits, Superstition, Pet Rescue, and Kendra Ballantyne Pet-Sitter mysteries.

So, what does Linda do when she's not writing?

When I'm Not Writing....

My Expanding Cavalier Collection

-           Linda O. Johnston

I have been in love with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels since I saw my first one on the Underground on my first trip to London.
Since then, I have had many Cavaliers in my life.  I cherish them--and wish they would live forever.
What lasts longer than they do, though, is my expanding collection of Cavalier memorabilia.  I've listed some of the stuff below.
When I got my first Cavalier, the breed was rare in the United States, and now it's popular, so it's a lot easier to find new things.  I almost always acquire anything new I see that's Cavalier--which drives my husband nuts!
I've never thought before about compiling a list of my Cavalier items, not till I communicated with Lisa about this post--and now I keep finding more things to add.
And in case you're a dog lover and also love a particular breed, whether or not it's a Cavalier, I'm sure you can start a collection of your own!

The Kinds of Things You Can Collect--Like I Do!

Here is a list of some of the items I've picked up over the years of my being owned by Cavaliers.  I acquire nearly all the kinds I can, but I'm sure there are lots more.  And every one of them has pictures or drawings of Cavaliers on them!

-           Art Work - including a piece I picked up in Italy.

-           Books:  Of course I'm a book lover, and I collect almost all the books devoted to Cavaliers that I can find.  Then there are my own books.  I wrote a time travel romance ONCE A CAVALIER featuring Cavaliers, and a Cavalier very much resembling my Lexie was in all nine of my Kendra Ballantyne, Pet-Sitter mysteries.

-           Calendars:  Every year, the wall calendar I keep in my kitchen has a year's worth of monthly Cavalier photos on them.

-           Eyeglass Case: I've got a really pretty woven one.

-           Figurines:  I have several small ones.

-           Folders: Since I'm always printing stuff I want to save I actually use some of those folders.

-           Magnetic notepads: They're notepads attached to magnets that I sometimes put on my refrigerator.

-           Magnets:  These usually small representations of Cavaliers can also attach things to my fridge.

-           Mugs: Since I drink a lot of coffee, these come in handy.

-           Notepads:  Those not attached to magnets and aren't spiral notebooks are available, too.

-           Plaques:  I've got several of these with decorative strings at the top that I often hook onto bookcases.  They generally say sweet things about Cavaliers, such as "A house is not a home without a Cavalier," and "Love is being owned by a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel."

-           Spiral Notebooks: These come in several different sizes and often many different Cavalier representations.  As with the folders, I use them too.

-           Sticky notes: These I tend to save without using, but they're adorable.

-           Stuffed Animals:  I keep my collection of Cavaliers easily visible.

-           Tee shirts and work shirts:  I own several of each and wear them whenever appropriate, especially when I want to show off my love of Cavaliers!

-           Throw pillows:  I have a couple that help to decorate a sofa.
