BOOK TOUR

I'm so happy to be a stop on the
blog tour for author
Tonya Kappes
and her new book
A GHOSTLY MORTALITY
Book 6 in the Ghostly Southern Mysteries

That ghost sure looks . . . familiar
Only a handful of people know that Emma Lee Raines, proprietor of a small-town Kentucky funeral home, is a “Betweener.” She helps ghosts stuck between here and the ever-after—murdered ghosts. Once Emma Lee gets them justice they can cross over to the great beyond.
But Emma Lee’s own sister refuses to believe in her special ability. In fact, the Raines sisters have barely gotten along since Charlotte Rae left the family business for the competition. After a doozy of an argument, Emma Lee is relieved to see Charlotte Rae back home to make nice. Until she realizes her usually snorting, sarcastic, family-ditching sister is a . . . ghost.
Charlotte Rae has no earthly idea who murdered her or why. With her heart in tatters, Emma Lee relies more than ever on her sexy beau, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross…because this time, catching a killer means the Raines sisters will have to make peace with each other first.

An Interview With
 Tonya Kappes

LKBR:  Thank you for being here today!

TK: Thank you for having me!

LKBR: Please tell us a bit about your Ghostly Southern Mystery Series.

TK: Emma Lee Raines is an undertaker who sees the ghosts of people she’s stuck six feet under only their death looked like an accident when they were really murdered and Emma Lee has to help them get to the other side by solving their murder.

LKBR: How did you come up with the concept for the Ghostly Southern
Mystery Series?

TK: There are only so many cozy sleuth’s occupations out there and I wanted something with a different concept. No one had an undertaker sleuth and I thought it would be funny to have ghosts help in the sleuthing.

LKBR: Do you have a favorite character in your book/series?

TK: I’m a little partial to Emma Lee because she fun, serious, loves her family, and wants to help people.

LKBR: Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others? Love, action, death, ect?

TK: Emma Lee dates the sheriff and in a cozy mystery the romance takes a back seat to plot and the secondary plot. So it’s hard to not write a big love scene for them when it’s got to be behind the scene.

LKBR: In your writing, have you ever used experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

TK: In my Kenni Lowry Mystery Series, the entire series is based on my hometown of Nicholasville, Kentucky. If you open up the book, you will feel like your smack dab in my hometown.

LKBR: When you’re in the process of writing/creating a book, do you use a computer, typewriter, dictate, or use pen to paper?
TK: I write on my laptop as well as keep a pen/paper next to me at all times.

LKBR: Do you have any writing quirks or rituals that you do before, during, and/or after writing a new book?

TK: No. It’s a job and I treat it as such. I get up, get ready and go into my office for a day of work.

LKBR: What does your family think about your writing? How important is their support?

TK: I couldn’t do it without the support of my family. When I started writing my kids (four boys) were small and my husband did a wonderful job helping me get them to and from practices as well as cleaning and cooking. Now they are 24,19,19, and 17 so they are practically grown.

LKBR: Who inspired you to write your first book?

TK: My husband.

LKBR: What was one of the most surprising thing you learned when trying to get your first book published?

TK: Just exactly how hard it really is….man-o-man…thick skin!

LKBR: What book are you reading?

TK: I’m currently reading Lynn Cahoon’s Story To Kill for my book club.

LKBR: Do you have any advice for aspiring cozy writers?

TK: Write, write, write, write, write, write….write!

LKBR: Where can readers go to learn more about you and your books?

TK: Visit me at Tonyakappes.com where you can find many southern recipes, contests as well as sign up for my newsletter.

MY REVIEW

A delicious second course in the Dinner Club Mysteries!

It was great to be back in Half Moon Bay with J.J. Tanner and friends from the Culinary Capers Dinner Club. And as much as I loved my first visit there when reading book one, TOASTING UP TROUBLE, this second installment, ROUX THE DAY, was even tastier!

I became a fan of author Linda Wiken when I read her Ashton Corners Book Club Mysteries under her pen name, Erika Chase (Read them if you haven’t!). I devoured every book in that series, and I’m am now having a glorious time feasting on the Dinner Club Mysteries.

ROUX THE DAY grabbed my attention from page one with the witty banter and fun demeanors author Wiken is so adapt at instilling in her characters. She not only brings them visually to life in my mind, she has made them people I actually want to be friends with.

I truly loved every bit of this book. Originally planning to read a few chapters before turning in for the night, I instead lost all track of time while absorbing every word of this first rate mystery. From the discovery of the victim, through the twists and turns of the investigation, Wiken had my brain firing on all cylinders, making sleep no longer an option. Even after the surprising reveal, and conclusion, I stayed awake replaying parts of the story in my head.

Linda Wiken is a superbly talented author, and she writes a cozy mystery that sets a standard for me when reading all other cozies. Her development of characters, situations, and the way she builds a truly artful mystery, make her one of the best writers in this genre today.

Be sure to check out the back of the book for yummy recipes, and an excerpt from book three, MARINATING IN MURDER!

You will rue the day if you don’t read ROUX THE DAY. New to the series? Grab a copy of TOASTING UP TROUBLE as well, and read them together!

TOASTING UP TROUBLE

A delicious new cozy mystery series featuring the Culinary Capers Dinner Club—who are fearless when it comes to cooking up new dishes and putting the lid on crime...

Event planner Jennifer “J.J.” Tanner has a full plate, but that’s the way she likes it. First, it’s her turn to choose the recipe for the next meeting of the Culinary Capers Dinner Club, a gathering of foodie friends who experiment with entrées for their creative and gastronomical pleasure. Second, she’s organizing an Italian princess party for the twenty-one-year-old daughter of a high-tech millionaire.

But one thing J.J. didn’t plan on is that the caterer for the event—hotshot chef Antonio Marcotti—would end up murdered the night of the party. Or that she’d end up being a prime suspect after having had a heated argument with the unscrupulous chef. Now it’s up to J.J.—with help from her fellow Club members and a handsome if mysterious private eye—to turn the tables on the real killer...

On to the recipe!

Spaghetti With Chicken, Broccoli, And Sweet Red Pepper

All food photos for the recipe are borrowed from Google Images.
Your dish will vary in appearance. (I am also showing different pastas you can use)

Ingredients

½ pound spaghetti
Himalayan salt—pinch
Regular olive oil
1 large broccoli crown, cut into tiny floret portions
1 sweet red pepper, sliced and diced
1 garlic clove, slivered
Mixed dried herbs (or fresh rosemary, basil, oregano)
Freshly ground pepper
Half package of frozen chicken strips
Tuscan herb-flavored virgin olive oil
Pecorino Romano cheese

Instructions

Bring large pot of water to boil and add a pinch of sea salt and spaghetti.
Cook uncovered, as per instructions on package, usually 10-12 minutes.

Heat skillet on stove and pour in enough regular olive oil to cover the bottom.    Add the broccoli bits, sliced red pepper, herbs (either dried or fresh), and garlic.

   Saute until broccoli look crisp.
Remove from pan, add more olive oil and the desired amount of chicken strips.
Cook until thoroughly heated (if frozen) or until cooked throughout (if fresh).    Add vegetable mixture and toss.

There are still plenty of cold nights to enjoy this one.
I bet it even makes a great cold dish!

Book 2 in the Greenhouse Mysteries
by Wendy Tyson

When the town’s pub owner is killed in a freak accident, Megan suspects something sinister is afoot in Winsome—but no one is listening. As nights grow longer and temperatures chill, Megan must plow through Winsome’s fixation with autumn festivities to harvest the truth—before another dead body marks the season.

MY REVIEW

Author Wendy Tyson has created a series that is absolutely wonderful in every way!

It has felt like such a long wait for this second installment in the Greenhouse Mysteries to come out. But after reading A MUDDIED MURDER, the first book in this series, a day would have felt like too long!

I was so excited when I finally got my hands on BITTER HARVEST. Once it was in my grasp, and I started reading, I couldn’t set it down! I was finally back in Winsome, PA with Megan, Bibi, Finn, Clover, King, and all the townspeople. It felt liking going home. As I write this, I’m actually sad that I had to say goodbye. L (No worries though. The next book is due out this fall!)

BITTER HARVEST is a brilliantly clever book in every way.  Wendy Tyson brought to us in this story, not just one mystery, but two! There is of course one heck of a whodunit murder to be solved. But there is a secondary mystery involving someone close to Megan that made this a real bushel full of mystery, and an even more exciting read. I want to say more, but I’d risk giving things away.

Ms. Tyson is an exciting voice in the cozy mystery genre, and nothing proves that better than this amazing book, or I should say, this amazing series! Fans, prepare to be thrilled. New readers, pick up A MUDDIED MURDER and BITTER HARVEST and you’ll have the fun of getting to read them back to back!
