It's
Cozy Food Friday!

That means it's time to share a recipe from
another great cozy mystery!

Today I'm featuring a recipe from
THE CAT OF CHRISTMAS PAST
Book 6 in the Whale and Tails
 Mystery series
by
Kathi Dailey!

It's Christmas on Madrona Island and Cait and friends have plans to embrace the magic of the season. The only dark spot on their celebration is the fact that a miserly old landlord is set on evicting an apartment building full of tenants just days before Christmas. Cait makes it her mission to save the old building and is aided by a cat named Ebenezer as they try to convince the old man to change his mind. Things look hopeless when she realizes that an unsolved mystery may be behind the man's gruff exterior. Cait vows to solve the mystery as a means of softening the man's heart and saving the apartments. An impossible task? Maybe. But Cait knows that miracles are real and anything can happen at Christmas.

Note for mystery purists: This story involves a cold case mystery which is linked to a modern day problem but does not contain a present day murder.

KOLACHY

Submitted to Kathi Daley by
Robin Coxon
for THE CAT OF CHRISTMAS PAST

This is a Hungarian cook my mother used to make. I remember helping her fill the squares and sealing them. I remember many years my mother made these and took orders in order to buy us Christmas presents. She also took orders and used the money to buy my wedding dress. These are fond memories of my special time with her. ~ Robin Coxon

Ingredients

1 cup butter, salted
6 oz. cream cheese, softened
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tbs. granulated sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder

Filling: You can buy fillings in a can or you can use jam.

Directions

Cut butter into cream cheese with mixer set on medium speed.
In a small bow, sift dry ingredients together.
Slowly add dry ingredients into butter/cream cheese mixture until a mealy texture forms.

On a lightly floured surface, dump out mixture and knead to form a stiff dough. Refrigerate overnight.

Cutting dough into for segments, roll dough out on surface dusted with a flour/granulated sugar mixture to approximately ¼ inch thickness.
Cut into 2½ inch squares.
Place ½ tsp. of filling into center of each square.
Pinch opposite corners together.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Lightly grease cookies sheet.
Place each Kolachy on cookie sheet approximately ½ inch apart.
Bake 10-12 minutes.
Remove to cooling rack.
When ready to serve, dust with powdered sugar.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm making up a couple batches of these for Christmas.
(If I can wait that long)

My Book Beginnings...

Holiday music blared through overhead speakers as I, Caitlin Hart, worked with a group of kids from St. Patrick's Catholic Church to decorate the choir room with red and green accents for the upcoming holiday. The children had all agreed to show up early for the regularly scheduled rehearsal for Away In The Manger, the Christmas play I had written with my totally wonderful boyfriend, Cody West, for the annual church pageant.

I felt like there was a clue there, but for the life of me I didn't know what it was. The timeline seemed to be airtight; everyone seemed in agreement as to who was where at what time.
