Aunt Hazel isn’t exactly sweet, but she’s not the only one putting syrup maker Dani in a sour mood. Her family is trying to help renovate the town’s Opera House, but their contractor Russ Collins seems to specialize in finely crafted excuses. And his latest one is killer.
In the Opera House basement, Russ uncovers the remains of Spooner Duffy, a charming drifter thought to have skipped town decades ago with a hefty sum of the town’s money. Tapping into some unpleasant memories, Spooner’s bones also threaten to reveal a murderer’s secret, and now it’s up to Dani to catch a killer before the town is stuck with a deadly reputation.

MY REVIEW
A STICKY SITUATION was a sweet delight of a mystery and left
me hungry for more.
There was no doubt after DRIZZELED TO DEATH, the first book in
the Sugar Grove series, author Jessie Crockett had a hit series on her hands.
Main character Dani and her family are so much fun. I come from a big family
and could relate to many things, family meals for one.
One of the things I love about cozy mysteries is learning
about so many different and new subjects. Crafts, professions, recipes (and
there are some yummy sounding recipes in this book). I really enjoyed reading
about making syrup. I never realized all the steps that go into the process.
The mystery involving the body of a drifter, thought gone
from town decades before, was really intriguing. I’ve always liked mysteries
stemming from the past. They’re so much harder to investigate with all the
years passed. The Nancy Drew living inside me was thrilled with this one.
A STICKY SITUATION is a very appropriate name for this book.
It was stuck to my hands from the moment I picked it up until the last page!
Today's recipe can be used on
many different things.
Meat, burgers, hotdogs, sandwiches or simply on bread or crackers.
BACON MAPLE CHUTNEY
This makes a wonderful housewarming gift or something nice to have on hand in the fridge when guests happen to drop by.
Ingredients
1 pound bacon
3 cups thinly sliced sweet onions
1/4 cup maple syrup
3 sprigs fresh rosemary
freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
Directions
In a large skillet, fry bacon until crisp. Remove from pan.
Remove and reserve 2 tablespoons melted bacon fat from skillet and discard the rest. Return pan to burner and add reserved fat.
Reduce heat to low and add onions and sprigs of rosemary, cooking slowly and stirring occasionally until they are very soft and golden in color.
Chop bacon into small pieces and add to pan. Stir in maple syrup and continue stirring until it is reduced and the entire mixture is sticky and thickened.
Remove rosemary sprigs. Add cracked pepper too taste.
Serve with crackers and cheese or add to sandwiches.

"Don't do it, Bea. He's not worth it." Talia Marby clamped her hand firmly around her employer's wrist, preventing Bea from pitching a chunk of fresh haddock at the man on the opposite side of the counter.
"But that wanker won't leave us along, Talia!" Bea spoke as if the man weren't standing six feet away, glowering at them. "He comes in here nearly every day to harangue me, and he's gone to the hospital twice to bother Howie. I won't have it!"

For the second time that day, visions of a wardrobe designed around a single color scheme---orange---flashed through Talia's head. "Jill, we have got to get out of here. Do you want to grab a coffee somewhere?"
"Let's go to my shop. I'll brew us a pot of tea. I just have to to fetch my gun."
I haven't started reading FILLET OF MURDER yet. It's next in my TBR and now that I have posts my Beginnings and 56, I'm looking even more forward to it than I was. :-)

ReplyDeleteLisa, your blog is so great. I feel so badly when I am tied up with so many other things and cannot always get to read it on time however. Life is just so hectic sometimes. I would make the chutney but would leave out the herb. I like sweet and savory sometimes but to me, in this particular recipe, I would like both the maple syrup and the bacon to shine, not have the herb overpower that. Just my opinion however.
